Cultural Understanding through Compassionate Dialogue

THETHA JIKELELE - "Communication Across Borders"

12.7.09

In 1990 Mandela came home to Orlando West, Soweto after 27 Years in Prison

"That night I returned with Winnie to No. 8115 in Orlando West. It was only then that I knew in my heart I had left prison. For me No. 8115 was the centre point of my world, the place marked with an X in my mental geography."

- Nelson Mandela - The Long Walk to Freedom

In 2005, students in my World Cultures' Classes at Oakland High School began corresponding with students in Uganda and South Africa through thematic written, art and video exchanges. The purpose of these exchanges were to foster cultural understanding and to raise awareness about HIV & AIDS - in Africa and in our local communities.

I'm here in South Africa on a teacher fellowship to build on this partnership, to connect and to learn and grow.

Thank you, Fund For Teachers, for making this travel opportunity possible!
